Taking Care of Gutters through Mildew Cleaning

Your roof's gutter system is an important part of its protection against water damage like roof leaks that may crawl to your ceiling and walls. It also keeps your yard safe from water that may flow from the roof due to runoff. Mildew that grows on your gutter system do not only create an ugly sight, they can also create health issues. To protect your gutter system, here are some ways to remove mildew that may have grown on it.

Wash your gutters to rid them of leaves, twigs, loose grime and mildew. You can use either an ordinary hose or a pressure washer for this. For large debris like fallen branches, use a garden trowel.

Make a mixture of one part bleach and four parts water solution and use this to scrub the gutter surface. This should kill most of the mildew. You can use environment-friendly cleaning solutions like vinegar instead if you have plants in the immediate area that might be affected by the bleach solution. Use an extended gutter brush or your car brush to reach the downspouts.

Be sure to rinse the gutter properly using clean water. Check regularly, preferably after one week, and every other day afterward, if the mildew has returned. If so, you might want to contact a professional contractor to check out your gutters.
