Ice Capped: Preparing Roof for Winter Conditions

Winter is supposed to mark the start of the holidays and should be a time for cheer. However, in cold climates like Denver, the season brings numerous problems to roofing in particular. Roofs are subjected to numerous hazards at wintertime, and homeowners should understand exactly how the cold affects their roofing and how some problems can cause roofs to give way.

Small flaws that are usually minor frustrations in better weather, such as cracks, missing shingles, and clogged gutters are magnified at the arrival of winter and heavy snowfall begins. The “minor” cracks can be aggravated by freezing temperatures that force the material to contract. Deteriorating gutters that can’t effectively channel water out of the roof will lead to ice dams that will eventually prevent proper water management. A roof that already has some problems is also likely to cave if too much snow builds up on its surface; the sheer weight of packed snow can easily bring down a weakened roof.

Homeowners should have their roofs fixed and prepared before the days of heavy snowfall begin. Winter roof maintenance though is something that is best left to roofing contractors. These professionals can identify any problematic parts of the roof, such as flimsy fastening and warped shingles, which could become liabilities once the cold kicks in.

Material Wealth: Choosing Good Roofing Materials

Like any part of the house, roofs come in a variety of options to suit homeowners’ tastes. Typically, owners would choose an architectural style that complements their house, yet there’s more to the large selection of roofs than aesthetics and style. Ultimately, householders should choose a roof that can protect them from the harsh elements and not merely look good on top of their residential properties. Roof materials vary in performance, and it would help householders to know the differences among them.

Perhaps the most important aspect of any roof is its durability, which determines how effective the system withstands the elements, as well as how many years it lasts. The most durable of roofing materials is slate, hewn from real stone and fashioned into plates and tiles. While extremely heavy, slate are known to last for decades with little maintenance as the stone is incredibly sturdy and weather-resistant.

While slate is immensely durable, its installation costs are expensive in comparison to the other roofing materials, especially when the existing trusses have to be altered in order to support the heavy load. However, those who do choose to have slate roofing are bound to realize that it is an investment that will pay off in the long run. Homeowners can also look into more reasonably-priced alternatives from Denver roofing companies that also boast of durability and good performance, such as tiles or metal roofing.

Using Metal When Roofing Denver Residences Can Help Curb Fire Threats

"Homeowners who use metal when roofing Denver homes or residences in any other city will have a lot to benefit from the decision, says the Metal Roofing Alliance. In an article posted on their website, the organization asserts that roofing systems made of this material can help curb damage to residences in case of forest fires. Metal roofs are typically composed of fasteners that are crafted from galvanized steel and other heavy-duty materials. They are also fabricated through a process that builds their strength and tenacity. As a result, they can withstand damage even from heat and fire."

NRCA Trains Roofing Companies in Denver and Other Cities on OSHA’s HCS

"The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) released a program this November that aims to further educate Denver roofing companies and contractors from other cities on boosting safety in the workplace. Called Hazard Communication Program: Know The Signs, the course trains roofing industry professionals on the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)’s revised guidelines for managing the risks of hazardous chemicals while they are on the job. OSHA’s new Hazard Communication System (HCS) will complement the provisions established in the Globally Harmonized System (GHS), a universal safety agreement created by the United Nations. The GHS mandates the use of simplified warning labels and graphics, as well as the creation of a safety data sheet (SDS) for all products that contain potentially hazardous chemicals."

Is Roof Replacement Needed?

The roofing system is often overlooked and homeowners seldom think about them until problems have become apparent. When they do, roofers are not the only contractors hired as the interior of the house may have been affected as well. Turns out saving dollars from taking care of the roof can lead to more expensive repairs or renovations.

To avoid this, homeowners should inspect their roof at least once a year before the damage results in leaks and water stains on ceilings. If this happens, a new roof is most likely needed. Homeowners should also check their roofs after storms. Extreme weather conditions can damage the roofing system, sometimes enough to call for a replacement. Missing, torn, bruising or cracking shingles are common indicators of storm damage.

Storms are not the only culprits for damaged roofs. Falling debris can also damage the tiles or shingles, causing an opening for the elements to seep in or pass through. Even with the perfect weather and environmental conditions, however, the service life of the roof still lessens. The quality of the shingles decreases with age so if it's a very old roof, chances are there are worn and brittle shingles.

Shingles also curl and blister if there are issues with the attic ventilation. Sometimes, these are due the shingle's quality itself, or the workmanship of the contractor. In these last two cases, a good warranty comes in handy.

Choosing the Right Roofing Company

Hiring a trusted roofing company is important not only because it ensures you get value for your money but also because there are some illegitimate companies that try to take advantage of innocent customers. If homeowners are not wary of these companies, they may end up spending more on repairs or even replacement.

To ensure the quality of work, only a licensed contractor should be hired to complete the maintenance or repair. Legitimate roofing companies, especially those who have been in the
industry for a long time, can provide references of their previous work. Homeowners may contact these persons and ask about the company's services or any other concerns regarding the contractor.

Before having the roofers start their actual work, everything must be written on a contract that includes a detailed estimate. If down payment is needed, it should neither be more than 10% of the project’s total amount nor above $1,000. Homeowners should also keep in mind that reputable companies have the resources to obtain supplies for the job so they don't have to ask for seed money to buy them.

Full payment should always be after the completion of the job, when the quality has been inspected and verified. If there's a warranty, everything that's covered should be clearly specified in writing.

When looking for a roofing company, paying less is not always the best solution because sometimes, this means you may have to hire another contractor in the near future.

Want to Save Cash with a Durable Roof? Use Slate for Denver Roofing

While slate roofs might cost a bit more compared to most other types of roofing, their benefits far outweigh this seeming disadvantage. Slate has exceptional longevity of up to 125 years, and there are even classical homes with slate roofing that held fast for about 200 years. Another advantage of slate is that it requires almost no maintenance due to its high resilience to the elements experienced in the Denver area such as hail and fire. Homeowners who want a durable and stylish roof that will last significantly longer than asphalt should choose slate roofing installed by reputable Denver roofing contractors like Integrity Exteriors.

"The town of Estes Park, known for being a tourist destination, was also affected by the heavy flooding that hit Colorado on September 15, 2013. As an article on DenverPost.com recounts, business owners in the area had to clean up the mess with hoses, sponges, and brooms to eliminate the mud and water from their shops. The shopkeepers said that their businesses were sure to be affected as the floods hindered visitors from even coming into the town. The main arteries into Estes Park – Highways 34 and 36 – were closed because some of its portions were missing. Why You Need a Certified Roofing Contractor

You depend on your roof to keep your entire household safe from the wrath of the elements. Meanwhile, the quality of your chosen roofing material will determine how well your roof can withstand extreme weather as well as everyday wear and tear. However, no matter what kind of roofing material you choose, its service life span will ultimately depend on how well you take good care of it.

For example, affordable and easy-to-install asphalt shingles are some of the most popular roofing materials in the U.S. today. These shingles come in a wide variety of attractive and low-maintenance designs. In addition, asphalt shingles have undergone significant modifications through the years that enable them to withstand extreme weather conditions.

Homeowners may also choose from slate, tile, metal, and wood roofing varieties depending on individual preferences and budget. These materials have distinct properties that influence their ability to protect against the elements and maintain optimum thermal comfort. Yet no matter which roofing material you choose, be sure to find a certified and reputable roofing contractor for any installation or maintenance work your roofing system requires in order to prolong it service life span and steer clear of costly replacements for far longer.

Climate Change: A New Challenge for Denver Homes

Colorado, along with the entire United States, is shifting its focus towards combating climate change directly after seeing its effects firsthand. Storms are increasing in intensity, and governments are taking steps to address this issue. Recent hurricanes such as Sandy have left many Americans in fear, and it is only appropriate to prevent that kind of devastation from happening again.

Though not everyone is sold on this idea, thinking that the issue isn't as big as it is thought to be, Colorado's new climate change czar seeks to raise awareness and improve the state's preparedness. While the state makes these changes on the macro scale, you should also think of your own steps to prepare your home.

You can, for instance, regularly check your roof for leaks and damage or, even better, get a professional roofer to conduct a thorough assessment of your roof's condition. The roof is the most important line of defense against the elements, so you shouldn't take its maintenance for granted.

Aside from that, you may want to consider whether you need to replace your current siding material with something more durable, especially if strong winds often visit your area. Siding protects your walls and also adds to the commercial retail value of your property. As such, you'll want to invest in quality exterior cladding so you won't have any regrets the next time a hurricane comes along.

Shingles List: Common Types for Your Home

Shingles are the outermost protection of your house to keep you dry and comfy, so choosing the best one that you could afford only makes perfect sense. However, with the long list of materials in the market, you could easily get confused and may end up choosing the wrong one. The best way to look for roofing materials is by researching thoroughly and making a list of pros and cons, as well as getting an estimate from a trusted roofing contractor in Denver. To help you get started, here is a short rundown of popular roofing choices:

Asphalt Shingles – made with a mix of different manufactured materials, asphalt shingles are well-known for their durability, light weight, and affordability compared to other types of shingles. The main setback is their lifespan, which is generally shorter than other materials.

Wood Shingles – more expensive than asphalt, but more aesthetically pleasing. Plus, it has a longer lifespan that could last up to 50 years with proper maintenance. Just watch out for termites!

Tile Shingles – these can get you better temperature control as they are great for keeping the home cool during summer and warm during winter. Tiles are usually made of terracotta, which is very expensive and quite heavy.

Slate Shingles – slate shingles, which are cut from rocks, are durable and inherently insect and fire resistant. They are strong enough to support the heavy weight of thick snow, but also needs heavier support under the sheathing.

Right Type of Roofing for Your Colorado Home

Colorado remains the state that has suffered the most wildfires this 2013. Although a forest fire setting your house ablaze is highly unlikely, it wouldn't hurt to be informed so you can make the best roofing decisions for your home now and in the future. Here are a few options and ideas for you to consider:

Wooden roofs are very popular because they can instantly make your home look elegant, but they can't adequately protect your home from fire. Aside from that, wooden roofing could cause you to pay high insurance premiums. Of course, the aesthetics of your house are very important to you, so if you do decide to go with this roofing option, consider using  fire-retardant, pressure-treated cedar roofing products.

Instead of a wooden roof, you can opt for one made of tile or metal. Tile products are inherently fire resistant. The downside is that heavy tile products carry a large cave-in risk in the event of an interior fire. On the other hand, metal roofs is an equally fireproof material that has a modern visual appeal and weighs 1/20th the weight of most tile products.

Your roof and its level of fire resistance is your first line of defense against fire hazards, so choosing the appropriate material is of utmost importance. Consult a roofing professional to make the best decision regarding this issue.

Metal vs. Hail: Debunking Two Metal Roof Myths

If you live in an area that frequently experiences hailstorms, you may be curious about how a metal roof fare against such weather conditions. If you already have metal roof installed, then you may be concerned that after a hailstorm, your beautiful roof will eventually be left pock-marked and dented. People have many misconceptions about how metal roofs perform in a hailstorm, and it's about time to debunk a couple of those myths.

Myth #1: Metal roofs are more susceptible to hail damage than other roofing systems

A recent article in Metal Roofing Magazine cites two hail studies performed by The Roofing Industry Committee on Weather Issues Inc. (RICOWI)--one from a 2004 hailstorm in Oklahoma City and another from 2011 in Texas. According to the studies, metal roofing holds up to hailstorms as well as or better than other roofing materials provided these are not the severe ones.

Myth #2: During a hailstorm, metal roofs are noisier than other roofing types

It may come as a shock to you that metal roofing is often quieter than an asphalt shingle roof. When a metal roof is installed properly and packed with a solid deck, underlayment, insulation, sheathing, and the other essentials, it will actually silence noise from rain, hail, and other weather disturbances better than other roofing materials.

Separating fact from fiction can help you determine the actual strength of a metal roof. Don't be afraid to ask a metal roofing expert in your neighborhood about metal roofing.

Taking Care of Gutters through Mildew Cleaning

Your roof's gutter system is an important part of its protection against water damage like roof leaks that may crawl to your ceiling and walls. It also keeps your yard safe from water that may flow from the roof due to runoff. Mildew that grows on your gutter system do not only create an ugly sight, they can also create health issues. To protect your gutter system, here are some ways to remove mildew that may have grown on it.

Wash your gutters to rid them of leaves, twigs, loose grime and mildew. You can use either an ordinary hose or a pressure washer for this. For large debris like fallen branches, use a garden trowel.

Make a mixture of one part bleach and four parts water solution and use this to scrub the gutter surface. This should kill most of the mildew. You can use environment-friendly cleaning solutions like vinegar instead if you have plants in the immediate area that might be affected by the bleach solution. Use an extended gutter brush or your car brush to reach the downspouts.

Be sure to rinse the gutter properly using clean water. Check regularly, preferably after one week, and every other day afterward, if the mildew has returned. If so, you might want to contact a professional contractor to check out your gutters.
